CILIP: http://www.cilip.org.uk/jobscareers/libex.html
Information on worldwide exchanges compiled by the American Library Association-International
Relations Round Table and the British group, Chartered Institute of Library
and Information Professionals. Both sites have useful links and ways
to look for exchanges and funding.
Rotary International Group Study Exchange: http://www.rotary.org/foundation/educational/gse/
This four to six week program provides travel grants for teams of new
professionals between 25 and 40 to exchange visits between paired areas
in different countries.
International Research & Exchanges
Board: http://www.irex.org/
International Organization Positions
United Nations Secretariat: https://jobs.un.org/
Librarian jobs are listed under Information Management. I read recently
that the UN Information Centres are undergoing a change in philosophy
from "collections to connections."
Jobs at large NGOs: http://www.careerframes.com/links_main_intl/ngo_links.htm
This site is a good place to start looking for jobs in the big NGOs like
the World Bank, IMF, OECD, and NATO. They also have international jobs
listed by country and type.
Smaller Non-Profits and NGOs: http://www.idealist.org
Librarian-type jobs are usually listed as researchers and information
managers.
Peace Corps: http://www.peacecorps.gov
A two-year volunteer commitment is required.
Full-Time Private Positions (also see Job Finders
below)
Foreign Service: http://www.careers.state.gov/
The Foreign Service hires Information Resources Officers to serve 12 areas
around the world.
Civilian Jobs in the Military: http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/
Searching USAJOBS can be tricky, but they do have a location search
called "Throughout
the World" that lists all civilian jobs available internationally
in the military and other government agencies. Grants and Scholarships
Fulbright Scholarships and Grants: http://www.fulbrightalumni.org/olc/pub/FBA/gfn/grants.html
and http://exchanges.state.gov/education/fulbright/
The Fulbright Program offers a variety of ways to serve abroad.
Foundation Center: http://www.fdncenter.org/collections/
The Foundation Center is the place to start looking for grants. They
have useful information on the site and this URL lists libraries around
the U.S. that have cooperating collections. The libraries listed will
have full access to the FC database and supplemental materials. Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships and Grants for University
Teachers:
http://www.rotary.org/foundation/programs.html
"These programs foster peace by building understanding through person-to-person
contact, friendship, study, and cross-cultural exchange."
Open Society Institute: http://www.soros.org/
OSI and the Soros Foundations Network award international grants, scholarships,
and fellowships in many discipline areas, including education.
Institute of International Education: http://www.iie.org/
Administers the Fulbright Program and initiates or sponsors other international
programs.
Volunteer Experiences
Internships: http://www.idealist.org
and http://www.un.org/esa/socdev/unyin/internships.htm
Although unpaid (and airfare is usually not included), internships are
a great short-term work experience. Food and board are sometimes included,
and you may be able to negotiate terms. Idealist.org lists many opportunities
and the UN accepts applications from students. During library school, the
end of your program is a great time to apply.
World Library Partnership
This is a 4-week summer volunteer program. “Since 1998, 125 volunteers
have worked with libraries in Zimbabwe, Honduras and South Africa.” For
2005, the volunteer program has been suspended and the future of the
organization seems uncertain.
Global Volunteers: http://www.globalvolunteers.org
In consultative status with the UN, Global Volunteers has placed more
than 16,000 volunteers.
