Held every two months
I am the NSU library reference department representative at the
BCL Reference Forum. The Forum is held every two months at a different
library branch and a variety of topics are discussed.

SEFLIN/ILIAC Technology Summit
A full-day summit focusing on Digital Libraries in Student Education and
User Services offered by SEFLIN (Southeast Florida Library Information
Network) and ILIAC (International Library, Information, and Analytical
Center). Presentations by Russian and Kazakh library colleagues.
U.S. Census on the Net
A full-day workshop by SEFLIN by a U.S. Census Information Services Specialist
on how to use census data. ALA 2006 Midwinter Conference
Attended five days of the conference in San Antonio.
Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute 2004-05
The yearlong leadership institute was a comprehensive series of learning sessions
that focused on developing an understanding of leadership within a conceptual
framework and practical applications for that understanding. We met once a month
at
a
library
in
Tampa,
with the last session in Tallahassee.
ALA 2005 Annual Conference
Attended four days of the conference in Chicago.
FLA 2005 Annual Conference
Attended four days of the state conference in Jacksonville.
ACRL 2005 Biennial Conference
Attended four days of the conference in Minneapolis.
ALA 2005 Midwinter Conference
Attended four days of the conference in Boston.
Virtual Reference in the 21st Century
A half-day SEFLIN workshop discussing the past years of virtual
reference and where the field is going Young Adult Resources on the Internet
A half-day SEFLIN workshop focusing on young adult service and resources. ALA 2004 Annual Conference
Attended four days of the ALA conference in Orlando, FL.
Grant Writing for Librarians
Attended a full-day SEFLIN workshop to learn about grant writing
for government and private foundations and the newest trends.
Communication Skills for your Library’s Front Line
Attended a full-day SEFLIN workshop to communicate clear messages
to others, use appropriate listening skills, and select styles of responding.
Habla Espanol Anyone? Basic Spanish for Library Staff
Attended one session of training in basic spanish to better serve
that user population. Hosted by the NSU Libraries Staff Development Task
Force.
Dade County Library Association Library Fair
Attended the annual fair of the Dade County Library Association
and two roundtable sessions: customer service and Florida Moving Image
Archive. Conflict Resolution in Libraries
Attended a full-day SEFLIN workshop to learn more about workplace conflicts,
recognize how personality and attitudes affect outcomes, learn how to give
valid feedback, and become more assertive.
Keeping up with NLM’s PubMed
Received formal training in a half-day workshop on using PubMed. Continuing
education course approved by the Medical Library Association for 4 contact
hours.
Citizen Contact Skills
Attended a full-day SEFLIN workshop to review effective communication
skills, handle complaints and difficult situations, and develop a better
understanding of the user.
Treaties and International Agreements and Library Reference
Attended a full-day SEFLIN workshop to learn more about resources
for finding and using treaties and international agreements in a reference
setting.
Grants, Foundations, and Non-Profits: An Overview
Attended a half-day SEFLIN workshop to help patrons use the Foundation
Center database and find information on grants. Dreamweaver MX
Received formal training in the use of Dreamweaver MX including how
to create and build web pages, manage files and upload.
Advanced Open Web Searching
Attended a half-day SEFLIN workshop to refine my open web searching
skills.
Ask a Librarian
Received formal training in the use of the statewide reference
chat service, Ask a Librarian. Became a certified digital librarian.
Professional
Pizzazz! Fall Workshop of the Florida Chapter of American College and
Research Libraries (FACRL)
Attended the 2003 Annual Fall workshop in Orlando dealing with publishing,
promotion and tenure, and other professional issues affecting academic
librarians in Florida.
Legal Research Tips & Tricks
Received legal research tips using Legal Trac, LexisNexis Academic
Universe and the Open Web to help provide reference service. Hosted by
the NSU Libraries
Staff Development Task Force.
Broward County Library’s Tuesday Track
Received formal training in the use of Broward County Library resources,
policies and procedures. Including: OneFile, Literature & Biography
Resource Centers, Business & Company Resource Center, NewsBank, WorldCat,
Health & Wellness Resource Center, NetLibrary, GPO Monthly Catalog,
SIRS Government Reporter, Grolier Online, SIRS Discoverer, and Learn-A-Test.
